Tell us a bit about yourself.
“I'm a computer scientist with a theoretical physics background from Ireland. I lived in Leiden for two years to complete my MSc. Computer Science in Data Science with a focus on Quantum Algorithms at Leiden University. I am a big fan of the Netherlands as I play competitive field hockey and enjoy the overall Dutch culture. Previously, I lived in Dublin and now I am based in California!”
Why did you apply for Internships in the Valley?
“I applied for this program because working in Silicon Valley is a unique opportunity being a hub where the majority of the newest technologies are being developed. The program provided a smooth process from the initial application all the way to the final visa processing. Additionally, there has been continued support during my period in the US.”
How have you benefitted from joining our program?
“In my case, the program helped to connect me with one of their partner companies, Applied Materials. I linked up with a CTO from the R&D team which is working on developing new optics devices for VR. At the time they were interested in an intern with a background in both physics and computer science, and luckily I was the perfect match!”
What was the biggest culture shock upon arrival?
“An earthquake! Although it was just a minor one. Also, the scale from little Leiden to large and sparse San Jose is a change that takes some getting used to.
